Ab-Soul’s Debut Album Pushed Back to 2015
If you're a hip hop fan, you're already accustomed to most rappers releasing free mixtapes before their retail studio albums. Managment company/ record label imprint Top Dawg Ent. has made it a point over the years to resist pressure from fans to follow that formula. Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and the rest of the roster have only released for-sale projects over the years.
Today Ab-Soul released one of those projects, 'These Days…'. While Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q are officially signed to Interscope Records through their Top Dawg Ent. imprint, Soulo is actually not signed and still an independent rapper. This leaves his newly released project techinically an independent release, as copies will not be available for purchase in major retail stores.
In the gray-area that is mixtapes vs. albums, Ab-Soul's major label debut album is still on the way. In the same sense that Kendrick's 'Section. 80' and ScHoolboy's 'Habits and Contradictions' are not considered their official debut albums. Top Dawg Ent. CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith took to Twitter to explain the situation and clarify that Soul's major label debut album will now be released in 2015.
This compltely clears the calander, with Top Dawg having released 4 of their 6 promised projects in 2014, for a TDE compilation album and Fall '14 Kendrick Lamar sophomore album release. Now the wait begins.
